后来，释迦牟尼从师隐居山洞的阿罗逻迦罗摩和乌陀迦罗摩学习禅定。前者教他“追随沉思默想步骤”，就能得到“空寂王国”；后者对他宣读“既非心理作用也非心理作用的状态”。
于是释迦牟尼独处一山洞之中，盘膝趺坐，面壁静心，以求觉悟。春去秋来，终无所得，他明白了这不可能得到启迪，于是改变主意，决定去体验禁欲苦行，以求解脱。
